English in use: Hi everyone! This is Mark again. Today, I want to talk about the suffix, ISH. For example, we use ish for a group of people who speak the same language. For example, English speakers. I’m an English speaker. Spanish, I can speak a little bit of Spanish: uno, dos, tres. Danish, Polish and so forth. We also use ish to describe characteristics of people. For example, she is boyish. That means that she is a tomboy. That means she enjoys boy things, wearing like boy clothing. We can say he is girlish; a little feminine. We also use ish for colors. For example, my sweater might be greenish blue? Maybe. What’s his hair color? It’s brownish. Ish means close to, around or about. We also use it for numbers and times. What time is it? It’s 7ish. (It’s about 7:00.) How old is he? He’s 20ish. (He’s around 20.) I’m 50ish. I’m in my 50s. In the comments, why don’t you make some sentences: make a sentence using people’s characteristics, for colors, for time and numbers and for groups.
